What to look for in air purifiers

Ozone-safe

Ozone irritates lungs. A CARB-certified purifier is safe to run all day in bedrooms and nurseries, and around children, pets and asthma.

CARB certified: California's air-safety certification. Each model is tested to show it doesn't give off ozone.

Independently tested

An extra layer of quality control: someone other than the maker checks what's inside.

Third-party lab tested: Testing by an outside laboratory rather than the brand itself, typically checking the product contains what the label says and is free from contaminants.

Always checked

Clean safety record

Every product on this page has a clean record. Products with a recall or an official security warning are never ranked.

We check official government recall databases, and for connected devices the US government's list of actively exploited security flaws, for every product.
