How we rate products
Consumer Product Authority helps you buy the right product first time. We don't test products ourselves. We do the digging that's hard to do on your own: the certifications, testing standards and safety records behind the best-rated products on Amazon, checked in the official records of the bodies that issue them.
How we pick and rate products
- We start with the best-rated products on Amazon. Every one we can find with strong ratings from real owners, across Amazon and our partner networks.
- We shortlist the best fits for each need. Judged on each model's specs, what owners say in their reviews, and how many people are buying it.
- We check their certifications in the official records. Safety, efficiency and performance certifications (for example CARB, ENERGY STAR, the Wi-Fi Alliance, the FCC, UL and Intertek), looked up with the body that issues them, plus official recall and security-warning databases.
- We rank them by approval rating. Certifications confirmed in official records count for 60%. How happy Amazon owners are, weighted by how many have reviewed it, counts for 40%.
What "verified" means
A rating is shown as verified only when we found the product in the official record of the body that issues it. Every one links to that record, so you can check it yourself.
What we never do
- Accept payment from brands for a place in our guides or a better rating.
- Claim to have tested a product ourselves.
- Recommend a product with an official recall or security warning.
Keeping guides current
Certifications lapse and new models arrive, so we re-check the records regularly and update our guides when something changes.
How we make money
We may earn a commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a rating. See our affiliate disclosure.
